halloween, bonfires and essays
This last week has really been defined by the weekends. We had a quiet week at uni so that we could work on our essays, due next monday. So while the few lectures we have had have been interesting there are no field trips to report on, and no museums to discuss endlessly.
Instead there has been halloween and bonfire night. Both quite new to me, and lots of fun. Unfortunately I have also been dealing with a rotten cold, so haven't made the most of the festivities. However there are still a reasonable number of photos for you to enjoy, even if there isn't as much text this week.
For halloween last weekend some of the girls from the same accomodation and I went across the road to the Halloween Ball at the fire station. We were hoping that it would be alright, but weren't too optimistic. However it was a great night. I was made to dress up by Nicola and Donna, and managed to cobble together a costume after Nicola and I spent most of friday trawling through Leicester trying to find either a respectable witches cape, or some decent devils horns. In the end we found neither, but found a good, cheap vampires cape and with some white face paint I looked pretty decent.

The fire station was very well decorated, with training dummies in nooses hanging from the ceiling, the bar all decorated, and tealight candles on the stairs leading to the rec area. There were also some massive cavases covering the walls with graveyears and haunted forests covering them. Obviously some very artistic guys in the crew. I stayed until it finished (shortly after midnight) but rather than continuing the night decided to be sensible and head for bed.
Even though I had been sensible my cold was a lot worse on sunday, and so the hockey game i was meant to play ended up being a bit of a non event. Thankfully there were enough subs as i spent most of the game on the bench. I played about 10 minutes total. We lost that game 3-0. As it was a cup match we needed to win to stay in the comp. A bit dissapointing, but we played fairly well, so that made it a little better.
This weekend was Bonfire night. 400 years since guy fawkes, so there was quite a lot happening. It was suprising to see fireworks for sale everywhere, supermarkets, newsagents, toystores etc. I am so used to them being very strictly controlled, to have them sold to anyone over 16 was quite a culture shock. It has also meant that all week fireworks have been going off at random intervals throughout the evenings. Partly that has to do with Diwali, the indian festival that was also celebrated early this week, but i think a lot of it is people enjoying having fireworks to let off.
Last night I wandered down to abbey park to see the firework display (couldn't keep me away) and also to see the bonfire. Unfortunately I got there a bit too late to see the bonfire being lit, and by the time i got there the guy was already burnt. However the fire was buring very well. It was so much bigger than i had expected, and put out a whole lot of heat.

the fire was made of factory pallets, so by the time the fire works were over, a bit over an hour after it was lit, it was just a smoldering pile. Perfect for cooking on, if it was a camp fire. the night was good, the fireworks show was lots of fun. but it was so cold and damp. instead of people finding places to sit, and spreading out with a picnic, as i was expecting, after all the fireworks shows i have attended in australia, instead everyone stood / huddled in small groups and tried to keep warm while waiting. Not quite as socialble seeming, but that didn't detract from the fun of the show.
other news is that i have finally got a bank account. Barclays were quite happy to give a bank account to an australian and said that they had no idea about any laws that might prevent it. funnily enough, it seems that the other bank were making things up. i also have a job interview tomorrow, it is a waitressing job at the hilton hotel, as a casual for when they have banquets and functions. it should be good as it is mostly evening work and no set hours. here's hoping.
that is really all the news this week. i will finish this post with some photos of the firework show because i love fireworks.
