new job etc

There hasn't been much to report this last week, which is why I have left it over a week to write this post. I have spent most of the week holed up in my room trying to finish the first graded essay for the course. 4000 words on an aspect of the history, development of culture of museums. My final piece was 3997 words, and hopefully was proof read carefully enough to ensure that there aren't too many silly mistakes in it. Working as a casual tutor at Mac Uni the last two years has certainly had an impact on my essay writing, I am much more careful about proof reading now, having marked too many essay that weren't proof read. I am reasonably happy with it, hopefully the markers are as well.

Other than the essay, I managed to secure a casual job this last week. I had an interview at a local hotel last monday (6th) and was offered the position at the interview. I started training the next day, and had a shift on the weekend. It all moved a lot quicker than i was expecting. However it is nice to know that i am now earning, as well as spending pounds. Thankfully I also have my bank account all sorted out now. So my pay is able to go into a proper account. I am working as a host (waitress) for functions and banquets at the hotel. It is a little way out of Leicester, but they look after their staff quite well, and if shifts finish at 11pm or after there is a free minibus to drop you home. So while this isn't necessarily a career progression, it is money and something to do. Hopefully i will pick up enough shifts before christmas that i can then do a little bit of travelling after.

I visited a Rotary club last week, and spoke there. My first speaking engagement at a rotary club over here. I took my laptop with presentation on it, only to find that for some reason i couldn't get my laptop to recognise the projector, so had to do the talk without images and slides. However it went okay. There were a couple of rotarians who said they enjoyed hearing a bit more detail about australia - i threw in few interesting facts, and spoke a bit about SA. Hopefully at my next talk i will manage to get the presentation working.

The most exciting (well interesting) part of the last week was today. A few friends from uni decided to celebrate handing in our essays by spending today visiting Cabury World. We didn't have any classes, so an excursion to a chocolate factory seemed like a good idea. The factory is in a small town just outside of Birmingham. The town has been built up around the factory, with many of the facilities (church, cricket ground, school etc) built by the cadbury family for their workers. The factory visit was okay, a little silly in parts - especially the Cadabra train ride through cocoa bean land. However the cheap chocolates from the staff shop were excellent. I think i have enough chocolate to last me through to my dissertation. However I still need more Tim Tams! (hint hint)

The Cadabra Train Ride

The cows who provide the glass & a half of milk (I thought they were scarey)

Norman the Gorilla with the cheap chocolates (not all for me i promise) and all that was only just £5!

After the chocolate factory we stopped for lunch in Birmingham. We wandered through the new shopping development there - the Bullring. It was really nice. It was an open air mall on a hill, so based over three different levels. I would love to go back and have another look around. I haven't been there before, and i was really impressed by it. Maybe over the christmas break i will go and have a wander around, after all it is only an hour away on the train.

Not sure what this building was, but was part of the bullring development. Have to go back and discover more.

That is about all for the week. I am getting up early tomorrow morning to hopefuly watch the socceroos beat uruguay and make the world cup. I will be estatic if that happens. Cross fingers etc. Please let the socceroos win ... considering i will be able to get to germany in 2006.

More museums next week.
