catch up

sorry it has been a while between posts. I have been quite busy doing nothing really interesting. However the last few days have been quite full with blog worthy things, so i will fill you in on those.

firstly i will show that i am becoming more like the English (well the stereotype anyway) and discuss the weather. I thought it was cold before, but the last week has got really cold. Our morning hockey match was cancelled two saturdays ago because of the dense fog and severe frost. I hadn't seen frost like it before, it looked almost like it had snowed - everything covered with this fine layer of white. I wandered through one of the major parks here, it was so pretty. The formal garden was totally white. Unfortunately i didn't have my camera with me, so no photos sorry. The other really exciting weather event was that it snowed yesterday. I was so excited, jumping around, and laughing at the fact that i was truly seeing snow for the first time. It snowed quite a lot through the afternoon and while not a lot settled, there was enough to crunch through. No snowballs though. However it bodes well for December and January. I hope to see more snow and be able to make snowmen etc. I did get some photos of the snow in the park just up the road, so you can share my delight.

On to events beyond the weather... I went to see Leicester City Football Club play a match on Saturday. City haven't been doing very well the last few years, and so far this season has been one of their worst, however I went to a brilliant game. They beat Sheffield United 4-2. Sheffield are 2nd on the table at the moment (Championship not Premier League) and early in the season beat city 4-1. So for City to beat them so well, with 2 goals in the first 15 min was excellent. It was so good to see a football match live. Listening to the chants of the fans was great, and thankfully the Rotarian who had a spare ticket for me to use was able to explain the meaning of the chants and why they were important. I had a wonderful afternoon and hopefully will get to see a few more games before the end of the season.

I have also been to an informal dinner held by my Rotary club. It was a nice chance to chat to the rotarians, chat to a previous scholar and hear a bit more about the rotarians and other scholars. Jessica, Beyza and I all went, it was a really nice idea by the rotarians. We haven't yet spoken at our host club as they have speakers up to the end of the year, but perhaps in January or February we will be able to present to them.

Today we had a museum field trip, the first for several weeks, and the second to last for the semester. We went to the Nottingham Museums, with sessions held in the Brewhouse, the Castle and the now closed costume museum. I think most of us found the costume museum section the most interesting. There we were actually able to see the storage areas and see how they worked with the 1000s of costumes they have. Meeting the conservators was also interesting as we could find out a bit about the problems with trying to maintain a constant environment in a place like the castle and in heritage listed buillding in general. However we had very little free time to explore the museums and displays, most of the day was structured talks with different departments, which are interesting in their own way, but with no idea about the museums and the exhibitions it makes it hard to see what they are talking about.

Otherwise I have been working quite a bit, christmas functions have started, so I am doing a lot of shifts. We only have a week and a half left until holidays, so then I will have time to go exploring and hopefully i will fit in quite a number of day trips out of Leicester. Many of my friends are heading home for the holidays, so i will try to visit those who are still in england as well. It should be a nice way of seeing parts of the country without spending too much money.

I will write again once uni has finished, unless there is something exciting like lots more snow.
